This past week I put together the Licorice and Lollipops quilt top. It went together very smoothly. There is so much variety in the fabrics that I didn’t have to spend much time playing switch a block. The bonus quilt, made with the left over triangles, is another story. I made the 52 blocks easily enough, pressing all the seams open takes a bit of extra time. Now they are up on the design wall, every time I look at it I find a switch that needs to be made. I am hoping to get this one together and off the wall this weekend.

I have been doing other things too, I got a lot more sewn on the baby sampler, so many thread changes. I sometimes feel like I spend more time burying threads than making stitches. I am happy that this is a smaller piece though. I think I am about half way through, I will need to graph out the name, so it is centered. I winged it with the birth date, and got lucky. Nobody likes to frog ‘over one thread’ X’es.

I made a set of matching bucket hats for an uncle and his niece, Fourth of July is next week, and they’ll be together. I also made two really cute dresses, the trim and rick rack are from old stash, the prints were too. Not me though, sadly I am holding down the fort, well not really sadly, as I will be enjoying a short at home retreat. There will be lots of sewing and early meals and maybe a little firework viewing. The nights lately have been cloud filled, so my view is limited. I’ll probably only be able to hear the booms from the five or six different towns displays near by.

The first of the two custom quilting orders has begun, it’s a simple heart panto that I have used often. The customer wanted smaller hearts, with the biggest being around four inches, so this simple panto now takes about twenty minutes per row to sew. Thankfully she isn’t in a hurry to get these quilts back. It looks pretty though, and really makes this simple jelly roll race quilt look finished.

I had a quilt customer contact me yesterday, about making up some kits that they had bought and where to learn how the make better quilts. I am a little stumped by the last question. There is so much out there to learn from it must be overwhelming, I need to find a few websites to lead them to an easy path. I think Bonnie K Hunter is a great teacher, then there is Eleanor Burns, I wonder if she still has tutorials available. Maybe Creative Grids, I think they have a bunch of tutorials. I’m going to look at Fat Quarter shop too, I know they do a lot of videos. I am pretty sure this person is just starting out, maybe they have a quilt shop near them.

The custom cushions are finished, along with a matching table topper. I ended up serging the edges, because the fabric kept unraveling in a most annoying way. They are done and packed up for shipping tomorrow.

This week I am trying to do too many little things and not starting anything new. It’s sort of a log jam, obviously not working for me, as I have little to show for it. I put away the MIAB blocks, I finished a few, but came to the one with 16 appliqué leaves on it and kinda lost interest. I feel like I need to make something pieced, more mindless sewing, save my hand work for cross stitching. I got the custom quilts figured out and the first backing on the frame. I want to get the batting cut today, so it can relax and be quilted this weekend.

I’m steadily stitching away on the sampler. There are so many color changes, I am averaging one motif at a sitting. Last night I stitched the clock, it’s supposed to say 1:45, but it looks like 12:45. I may change the hour hand. I am getting better at stitching the one over one stitches. The bees and ladybirds are so small, cute though.

I decided to put the lollypops and licorice top together this week. I got all the pieces cut Monday, and yesterday I sewed together two parts of the block. There are 42 blocks in this lap size quilt, each one has 6 pieces. The fabric does a lot of the work, the black printed stripe makes the quilt, IMO. Cutting all these, 126, diamond shapes leaves a lot of equilateral triangles, enough for a whole ‘nother quilt top. I like that the original fabric was printed with many different coordinating prints. It’ll be easy to make a scrappy look. I may add in some more solids for this “bonus quilt”, rather than sticking with the light pink that came with the fabric kit.

Today, I want to get started on a custom cushion that I offered to make. Only one this time, for a bench, oh and a table cloth with a few pillows from left overs. I want to get the cutting done, then sew it together Sunday or Monday. There is piping, yuck, mindless straight stitching. I am looking forward to using the basting tape like I did for the last cushions I made. It’s so much easier than pins and clips, especially when sewing the thick fabrics together.

And a little of that. I’ve been working a bit on getting blocks together for my current and old BOMs. I am really happy to have the center of the Blooming beauties together. I probably should have taken some before, and during construction photos. I laid all the blocks out on my ironing board in piles with labels attached. Then carefully placed them on the design wall in the correct order. I double checked and triple checked, then sewed together the left half, then the right. I sort of webbed the rows together, but since the diagram is on point, I had to clip them apart then sew the columns together. My brain just couldn’t wrap around the design when I put it square. The inner borders were fairly simple, I again lined up the piles of QST and sewed them together. I am actually caught up with this BOM until next month. Looking at the finished quilt, I think it will be a little more interesting to sew the assorted blocks that are in the outer sections.

Yesterday I got the Message in a Bottle BOM out and got situated with where I left off. I have a large appliqué block (16 leaves), few more little appliqué blocks and some pinwheels to do to finish that months blocks. But it is out and available to stitch.

On the long arm front, I need to get some designs figured out for the two customs I have taken in. My customer asked for something geometric and something floral. I just have to put some time in. I ordered a roll of batting, I ran out of white a few moths ago, and only have warm and natural. I had a less than perfect experience with the last roll of Hobbs I bought, apparently there are different levels. This time I bought the premium one, it is 80/20, but hoping it is more consistent. I also indulged in some notions (new batting scissors yay!) and a pattern from Wing and a Prayer called Stormy Sea. I got a whole set of digital quilting designs that go with it from Wasatch this month. It is a BOM set up, but I think I have enough blue, brown and grey batiks on hand to make it.

The threads I ordered for the sampler came in yesterday. I got a start on it last night, I am beginning at the bottom and so far it’s interesting, with a few different stitches and color combos. The grass stitch is relatively easy to do, but those little flowers stems are challenging on the linen. I do like that this piece is small (5″x 9″), so I am hoping to get it done in a reasonable amount of time.

In the package with the thread was a yard of flag fabric, I want to make two bucket hats for an Uncle and his niece to wear this Fourth of July. Once the MIAB blocks are done I will reward myself with something fun and done.

My trip took me to the east coast of America, New England, Massachusetts. It is spring time there, everything is green and lush, flowering and moist. While there, I experienced rain storms, including one that dumped 5 ½” of rain in one day. Coming back to the west coast of America was a bit of an adjustment – visually. Here things had peaked back in April, now the grasses are done and the flowers continue, but not with the abandon of a few months ago. I returned to a bunch of fabric “someone” ordered and sent to my house. Packages of happiness and fun to open all at once. I haven’t found a place to put it all yet, so it is all free ranging in the sewing room.

I made some head way on the Tilda Birthday quilt, one corner of flowers and the name are stitched on. I managed that over a few nights of stitching, but I feel like the end of the appliqué is in sight. I also brought along a cable sweater, but ended up ripping out what I had stitched on the front panel. Note to self, knitting with dark colored yarn in low light is not going to yield accurate stitches. Mostly what I did in MA, was loving on a beautiful baby girl. Sigh, I miss her.

Two projects I have gotten done this week are the 48 QST blocks for the Blooming Beauty BOM, and I framed the Fabulous houses with the frame I got before I left. I need to get the Starry Skies June installment, Gemni, papers printed and start that block. Then I need to decide on a new project, I am wavering between a Log Cabin queen size, the Lollipops and Licorice kit, and the Lion Head quilt from Violet Craft. The fabric kit for this was in the happy packages, and I have the pattern.

I’ve added a few Xs to the Consider the Lillies cross stitch the past few evenings, almost done with this page. I am going to put it away to start a new birth sampler, I ordered the floss colors I don’t currently have, they should be here next week. I know I have said that I’m done with samplers, but this one is so pretty and not very large. I also want to get the long arm up and running, as I have a backlog of tops. In between cleaning this house up to be presentable for a guest this weekend. I also have a two quilts coming in from a client for quilting and binding.

Hitting the ground running. It feels good to be busy again, doing my own things, at the same time relaxing into the summer that is rapidly approaching.

My Vacation time is looming up, and my time to finish my current projects is almost done. I feel pretty good about what I accomplished this week.

The Tummy time Mat (under the sea quilt) is together and ready to go. I made an envelope style backing with velcro closures and added it to the quilt. I sewed it all together, the quilt and the extra back, with a binding to match the front. Then I made a large liner cover to fit inside the pocket. I will fill the liner with two layers of thick poly batting to give a little cushioning. – Depending on how the parents feel about it, the baby is almost 6 months old at this point, but fluffy things are discouraged.

The forest fungi quilt is quilted and bound. I got the kit on 4/21 and finished the quilt on 5/7, pretty good turn-over rate. This is a gift for a friend who I will be seeing Sunday, so all good there. I used a washable wool batting for this batik quilt and I really like how it feels, light and airy. Plus, the quilting shows up just enough for a bit of texture. I find that batik quilts often look flat and can feel heavier than “regular” quilted fabrics. I used my go-to needle, 100 chrome universal, for the quilting, with no troubles. I whipped up the Starry Signs Taurus block too.

I wanted to get my take-a-long (the Tilda quilt) hand project ready to go. I am almost finished with the appliqué on the main piece, but needed to trace the top and bottom sections and get the fabrics basted on. I was able to get that started yesterday and decided to take only the top piece as there is probably enough to keep me busy. Today I’ll spend some time basting the rest of the flowers and leaves. It is my goal to finish this before November, I bought the kit on May 7 last year. That makes me laugh, I looked back to that post, 4 Patchy Patches. I had the best intentions of finishing it before November 2024, now I am shooting for November 2025. The other appliqué BOM, Message in a bottle, needs to be back in the rotation too. I started that as a BOM in August 2022, Hmm. Once I get back, I will take it out and assess. I think there are three more large appliqué blocks and a bunch of smaller pieced blocks left to do. Ew, looking at the pattern picture, I know I have not done any of the outer border blocks. I might try some machine appliqué techniques there, I really don’t like making the same blocks over and over even if they are scrappy.

I broke down and ordered a custom frame for the Fabulous Houses. I couldn’t find anywhere to order spacer bars in a small quantity, and the frame I have was not going to work. The new frame (18 x 24), acrylic sheet, backing and spacers were about a hundred dollars, shipping another 17.00, still way less than having it professionally done. I’ll tackle it once I return. More motifs have been stitched on the Lillies of the Field (started 7/23) piece. I have been trying to do more, but with all this busy-ness during the day, I find myself nodding off while stitching. Thankfully it’s not as dangerous doing so during other activities.
