I was productive last week.  I finished a quilt top, quilted and bound and gifted a baby quilt, started to re-upholster an old chair and started a scrap quilt.  I didn’t get to my Farmers Wife blocks though.

A few months ago, Cr*ftsy was having a sale on quilt kits.  I got three, one because I had the same fabric line in my stash and not enough to make something with it, and two called “Sombre” in different color ways.  “Sombre” is a free pattern from Robert Kaufman fabrics, it was pretty straight forward, just follow the map for color placement.

I think the whole top took about 8 hours total (including cutting), the blocks are large 16″ finished.

The quilting on on the baby quilt size of “Daybreak” (Jaybird quilt pattern) went well.  I had to take “El Camino” off the frame again, as I still have not finished it.  I used a pantograph with leaves and swirls and a fluffy Poly-batt.  Its pretty and I finished it the day after the baby was born.

My chair re-upholstry job is stalled, as I need to refinish the wooden legs and trim on it before applying new stuffing and fabrics. This chair was rescued from a garage sale about 12 years ago, for 15.00.  I think its sort of mid-century modern.  Its original fabric was avocado green and harvest gold floral print, oh so seventies.  I carefully peeled it off and took pictures of each step, so that I can put it back together anew.  This poor chair had about eight hundred tacks and individual nail head tacks holding the fabric on.  The frame is still sturdy though and the springs are tight. There are no loose cushions, and a bit of piping, not too complicated.   I’ve done a few other chairs and even a sofa once, so my knowledge is a little limited on how to complete this, but I ‘m sure there are some You-tube videos out there – and I have a very good how-to book.

Yesterday I started my scrap quilt project.  I have been cutting 2 ½” squares for a while now, I have quite a large box of them.  Originally I was thinking of making Bonnie Hunter’s “Split Patch Nine” quilt, then I saw a pretty version of “Rick-Rack Nines” in one of her recent slide shows.  Its a pattern from her book “Leaders and Enders” you can see it below on the lower left hand corner of the book cover.  I made 33 blocks so far, Bonnies pattern uses 2 inch squares so there will be some math involved in figuring out the solid blocks and borders.  Funny how each of my scrap squares has a quilt memory attached to it.  It seems like a personal journey through my quilt making.
